6th Grade Social Studies

Regions of the Western Hemisphere
Social Studies in sixth grade provides an overview of the history, geography, culture, and current events of regions of the Western Hemisphere (Latin America and Canada).  Students are introduced to skills such as determining cause and effect, differentiating between primary and secondary sources, and creating sequential timelines.  The fine arts and technology are integrated into these regional studies.
 
Learning the Western Hemisphere
s Its exploration, conquest and colonization, and the influence of geography
s Revolution, democracy, economic structures, and immigration
s Economic interdependence, technology, environmental and social concerns, and natural resources
 
Learning the skills of history, geography, and economics
s Distinguishing between primary and secondary sources
s Determining point of view
s Distinguishing between fact and opinion
s Learning note-taking
s Researching current events
s Learning to compare and contrast
s Understanding cause and effect
s Applying sequence and chronology
s Classifying relationships between groups
s Reading maps, charts, and graphs
s Using latitude and longitude
s Using current and historical maps
s Recognizing the diverse nature of cultures
s Using persuasive argument to defend a position
s Determining basic societal needs and wants
s Research skills (gathering information, citing sources)
