Read and analyze different forms of literature:  drama, poetry, fiction, non-fiction, and mythology
Identify elements of the novel and short story including:  plot, character, setting, conflict, point of view, and tone
Recognize the characteristics of various genres     
Read and understand a variety of materials including technical writing, newspapers, magazines, poetry, short stories, plays, and novels
Build vocabulary
Write well-developed sentences within a paragraph and write three-paragraph essays that reflect creative and critical thinking
Write introductory paragraph with thesis statement, body paragraph with topic sentence and supporting details, and concluding paragraph (persuasion, comparison/contrast, cause/effect, research writing)
Use effective language that engages the reader
Use correct grammar, spelling, and mechanics
Organize formal speeches using an introduction, body, and conclusion to reinforce skills learned in sixth grade
