  • Read and analyze different forms of literature:  drama, poetry, fiction, non-fiction
  • Identify literary elements of the novel and short story including:  plot line, characterization, mood, and theme
  • Recognize literary devices and techniques, and terms of poetry    
  • Read and understand a variety of materials including technical writing, newspapers, magazines poetry, short stories, plays, and novels
  • Enrich vocabulary
  • Develop thesis statement and supporting details to show creative and critical thinking
  • Write five-paragraph essays with an effective introduction, detailed body paragraphs, and a conclusion that gives a sense of resolution (expository, persuasive, memoir, and creative writing)
  • Use effective language that engages the reader
  • Use correct grammar, spelling, and mechanics
  • Organize and present formal speeches using an introduction, body, and conclusion
  • Consider audience by using eye contact, gestures, and voice projection
  • Use appropriate word choice
