Dear Parents and Students,
With spring quickly approaching, our young Falcons are preparing for mandatory state testing that will occur during the months of March and April. TCAP (Transitional Colorado Assessment Program) testing will take place during the week of March 10 through March 14. Make-up testing for all absent students will take place during the week of March 17 through March 21. CMAS (Colorado Measure of Academic Standards) is a brand new state test that will be administered through students' 7th grade social studies classes and 8th grade science classes. Exact testing dates for the CMAS Test are still being determined.
Parents, please be sure to keep your child in school during these critical times, and avoid setting appointments, if at all possible.
As this will be the last school year for TCAP, I will continue to take the opportunity to inform parents about the new state test (PARCC – Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers) that will be implemented beginning school year 2014-2015. Although the PARCC Test is still in the formative stages, we are already providing our students with the technical tools, content knowledge, and thinking processes that they will need to be prepared for this new assessment, and more importantly, to be ready and prepared for college and careers.
The new Common Core Standards in English/Language Arts and Mathematics are being implemented in our classrooms, along with the changes in the Colorado State Standards for Social Studies and Science. As we continue to help parents stay abreast of these changes, please don't hesitate to talk with your child's teachers about how you can support her/his success at home. Given these changes and shifts in curriculum, I highly encourage you to attend our PTO meetings, Principal Coffees, Accountability meetings, PASS meetings, Parent Academies, and Parent/Teacher Conferences. These venues are all tremendous opportunities for parents to learn, ask questions, and experience (first-hand) how these new standards will impact student learning in the 21st century.
Planning for the new 2014-2015 school year has already begun. Students have registered for their classes, and the master schedule, teacher staffing, and student placements are in process. We are continuing to look for ways to stream-line our process for our August Student Check-In, making this more efficient and convenient for our busy families. Be looking for updated information regarding Student Check-In in our next newsletter.
In closing, I would like to recognize and congratulate our student body for the many outstanding awards, contributions, and hard work our young Falcons have accomplished over the last few months. These are our leaders of tomorrow, rest assured; we will be in good hands!
Ms. Lisa Ruiz
