Dear Parents and Students,
Welcome to the 2013-14 academic school year at Falcon Creek Middle School! I hope you are as excited as I am to begin a new year filled with the Falcon Creek tradition of academic excellence and artistic exploration. The Faculty and Staff have been extremely busy preparing for our new and returning students. As I begin my first year in this new role, I am honored to serve as the Principal of Falcon Creek Middle School. Through partnership, open communication, and a spirit of genuine regard, I am confident that all our students will have a successful year.
I hope you will enjoy reading The Falcon Creek Flyer while visiting our website (www.fcms.ccsd.k12.co.us) for important information concerning school programs, upcoming events, staff contact information, and links that will help you to get to know everything about our school. In addition to our website, there are a variety of methods in which communication may occur. The use of PowerSchool is the method of communication to access “real-time” information regarding your student’s attendance and grades. COLE 3.0 is the method of communication to access detailed information and announcements from your student’s teachers, including assignments for the upcoming week. Many of you received access information during Back-To-School Night, on August 28, 2013. If you are still experiencing difficulties, please contact our Technology Coordinator, Ms. Julie Cummings, at 720 886-7732. Please note, the conventional methods of phone calls and email are also available and will continue.
Just recently, Falcon Creek Middle School received our School Performance Framework Report from the Colorado Department of Education. Once again, Falcon Creek has been recognized by the Colorado Department of Education as a Performance School, which is the highest category that can be assigned. This means that the spring 2013 TCAP results show our Falcon Creek students met the performance indicators, set by CDE, for academic achievement, academic growth and academic growth gaps in reading, writing, math, and science. As for our progress towards Excellence and Equity, our Falcon Creek Students exceeded five out of six key performance targets for TCAP performance and growth and the 8th grade EXPLORE Test results for College Readiness. The target that we continue to focus on is our performance gap between our Students of Color and our White/Asian students. Closing this gap and ensuring access and opportunity for all students to experience rigorous, high-level course work is my highest priority and commitment to our community. With your help and support, we will achieve this goal.
To this end, I am excited to share with you a new teaching model that has been adopted this school year called “co-teaching”. Some of your students will have the opportunity to be in grade- level academic classes with two teachers instead of one. This “co-teaching model” provides students the support of both the content-expert teacher and the access-expert teacher. This teaching model has been proven to have enormous success in building student confidence and student achievement while providing more one-on-one attention and stronger relationship building.
Our Extended Learning opportunities are tentatively scheduled to begin on Monday, September 16, 2013, and will continue through the end of May, 2014. Our Extended Learning is offered every day, except Wednesdays, both mornings and afternoons in our library. We are open to offer tutoring from content teachers (Math, Reading, Writing, Social Studies, and Science, help with organizational skills, or just a quiet academic setting to prepare for the day. The hours are from 7:05 am to 7:45 am, and after school from 3:00 pm to 3:50 pm. Library books may only be checked out in the mornings on these days.
Please take special note of our expanded Falcon Creek Summer Boot Camp, which we will be offering the summer of 2014. In addition to math opportunities, we are expanding our Boot Camp classes to include reading, writing, and STEM experiences that will provide students with that extra time to catch up and keep up in high school and beyond.
Before closing, I would like to personally acknowledge the outstanding service and dedication that is given to our school from our PTO Board Members and volunteers. We couldn’t do it without you! Please continue to support the PTO fundraising efforts through our Fall Magazine sale. Information regarding our magazine fundraiser will be coming home with your student during the first week of September.
Again, thank you for the opportunity to serve as the Principal of Falcon Creek. It is now time for our young Falcons to spread their wings and learn to fly. Ultimately, as they navigate the middle school experience, our goal is for them to SOAR!
Lisa B. Ruiz, Principal
