Dear Parents and Students,
On behalf of the Falcon Creek Staff, I wish you all a happy and safe 2014 New Year! It is hard to believe that half of the school year is already behind us. Our Falcons are looking forward to registering for new classes, making elective choices, preparing for TCAP and CMAS testing, and gaining the habits necessary for success in high school, college, and the workforce.
As always, I encourage you to view our Falcon Creek website (falconcreek.cherrycreekschools.org) for all pertinent information regarding upcoming activities, programs, and events. I also want to encourage you to attend our Coffee with the Principal, PTCO Meetings, Accountability Meetings, and our PASS Meetings, whenever possible. Further clarification regarding dates and times for all parent meetings can be found by clicking on the Parent Information Link.
With the recent tragedy at Arapahoe High School in Littleton, Colorado, we continue to closely examine our safety procedures. One immediate change was to limit access to the building only through the Main Entrance. All exterior doors will remain locked once school has started. This includes the Lower South Entrance. We will continue to practice drills with our staff and students on a regular basis.
You will soon notice a change in your child’s lunch/recess schedule. Beginning Monday, February 3, 2014, students will be flipping their normal routine to recess/lunch. This includes 10 minutes of outside recess first, followed by 20 minutes of eating lunch in the cafetorium. Several schools have adopted this procedure with positive results. We feel it will benefit our students by providing tighter control/supervision of all students during overlap times, and encouraging students to eat a full, 20 minutes (instead of them rushing through to get outside and play). Please let us know what you think!
I would like to take this opportunity to recognize some of the outstanding contributions made by our Falcons. Over 30 SOAR Students have signed on to be trained and participate in “No Place for Hate” through the Anti-Defamation League. The all-school kick-off will be coming in February, when students will be encouraged to pledge tolerance for others by making their own link in our “Chain of Respect.” Our Performing Arts Department is deserving of special accolades, also. Several 8th grade students participated in rigorous, try-outs and were selected to participate in the prestigious Colorado All-State Choir and the Colorado All-State Band/Orchestra. In addition, I am sure you will agree with me that our fall Play, “The Wild, Wild, Wildest West,” was the “Best, Best, Best-est” play ever!
As we head into our testing months of March and April, we will provide you with information regarding specific dates and details for both the TCAP (Transitional Colorado Assessment Program) and the CMAS the (Colorado Measure of Academic Standards) that most of our students will be taking. This year, we are discouraging students from bringing snacks in during testing. More information regarding this will follow.
Thank you so much for the close and supportive partnerships you have given us over the past several months of school. Working together, we will continue with the rich tradition of “15 Years of Excellence” at Falcon Creek Middle School.
Warmest Regards and Happy New Year,
Lisa B. Ruiz
