Immunizations

We follow the immunization guidelines set by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE). Colorado law requires that all students have up-to-date immunization records or a valid exemption on file. For middle school students, the TDAP vaccine is required upon entry into sixth grade. If you receive a notice that your child’s immunization record is incomplete or out of compliance, please take care of it as soon as possible. There are often options to receive required vaccines at no cost or a reduced rate. Once your child’s record is updated, be sure to provide a copy to the school nurse.

Families who choose not to vaccinate must submit either a medical or nonmedical exemption. Medical exemptions require documentation from a licensed healthcare provider. Nonmedical exemptions must be renewed every school year, beginning July 1. You may file a nonmedical exemption either by submitting a form signed by a Colorado-licensed provider or by completing the CDPHE’s online immunization education module. For more information, including forms and exemption details, please visit https://cdphe.colorado.gov/immunization/school-required-vaccines or reach out to the school clinic with any questions.

Medications and Medical Procedures

If your child needs to take prescription medication during the school day, a signed authorization form from both a healthcare provider and a parent or guardian is required. Medications must be provided in a pharmacy-labeled container, and any changes to the dosage or instructions will require an updated form and container. In most cases, pharmacies can provide an additional labeled container for school use upon request.

For rescue or emergency medications such as inhalers or epinephrine, the same written permission is required. These medications are typically stored in the clinic unless the healthcare provider and school nurse determine that the student is capable of self-carrying and self-administering the medication safely. If approved, an additional agreement must be signed by both the parent and the student.

Medical procedures that need to be performed at school, such as G-tube feedings, also require a signed physician’s order and the appropriate documentation submitted to the clinic.

Over-the-counter medications can be given at school with written parent approval, which is typically provided during the student registration or check-in process. These medications must be in their original, unopened packaging with a clear label. Students are not permitted to carry or self-administer over-the-counter medications. If your child needs over-the-counter medication more than once per day or in a dosage outside of district policy, a written order from a healthcare provider is also required.

If you have any questions regarding medications or procedures, please contact the school nurse.

Vision and Hearing Screenings

Vision and hearing screenings will be conducted for all seventh-grade students, as well as for students who are new to the district. If you prefer that your child not participate in these screenings, please notify the school nurse to opt out.

Concussions, Illness, and Health Updates

If your child is diagnosed with a concussion, it’s important to inform the school nurse as soon as possible so we can provide the appropriate accommodations. Please keep your student home if they have a fever. If your child tests positive for the flu or if there are any updates or changes to their health during the school year, we ask that you contact the school nurse directly. Open communication is essential in helping us keep all students safe and healthy throughout the school day.
